Back in 1988 when I had a Thursday morning drive-time radio show on WBCR in Beloit Wisconsin I played a lot of post-punk, garage rock and folk music. I did not play hard core, metal, pop or rap and all six of my loyal listeners knew it. But one day a young voice called up and asked for blah-blah blah-blah blah blah blah blah blah to do something. Who? I asked. Same sounds came through the phone. I made out DJ and Prince. Still nothing. Because I had no clue what was popular, I just knew what I liked.
What the kid wanted was DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and until the TV show I didn’t know who the heck that was. Now I like a lot of their stuff. It’s fun, infectious and innocent. Well, except for Switch. But still, here’s Summertime.
