What I Like About …

I absolutely, and embarrassingly, love pure pop songs. I grew up on arena rock and punk and folk and classical (older brother, eclectic parents, the 70s) where pop was anathema. But I always loved a good pop song.

And the truth it that Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe is a really good pop song. It’s not brilliant, but it’s really good. And the denouement to the video really makes it worth watching.

I personally think Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut is a much better, and much more accurate, novel about dehumanizing industrialization, but Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is pretty dang good, too. Here’s the BBC’s teleplay version of the classic novel from 1980, free to watch!

This is, bar none, my absolute favorite version of Stormy Weather.

Apparently Stephen Hawking didn’t believe we would find the Higgs Boson particle (or wave, or field, or whatever the damn thing is) and bet $100 against the discovery. Given his smile at the end of this video, he’s glad to have lost.
